The board of trustees of CAUT’s national benefits trust, an initiative put in motion at CAUT’s spring Council meeting, held their first meeting last month.

“The benefits trust is an historic step forward and a significant expansion of CAUT services,” said CAUT president Penni Stewart. “The trust offers control over benefit coverage and is now fully prepared to accept new members.”

During the two-day session in October, trustees were briefed on their legal responsibilities and heard presentations on benefits and insurance, among others.

Nancy Langton, a professor at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business who joined the trustees as chair earlier this year, said the trust will provide for a “full range of benefit plans for local associations.” Plan parti-cipation members will also have input into the benefits program, have full information on plan performance and achieve cost saving through volume discounts.
