Settlement Ends Reynolds Case

Dr. Larry Reynolds has been restored as professor of medicine at the University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, with joint appointments in family medicine and obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences.

In response, CAUT dropped its plans to censure the two institutions at its November Council meeting.

“We’re delighted Dr. Reynolds has reached a settlement with the university and the regional health authority that satisfied our concerns,” said CAUT executive director James Turk. “The settlement terms are confidential.”

CAUT had alleged the university and the WRHA fired Reynolds from his position as a tenured professor of family medicine two years ago without just cause or due process.

CAUT had earlier set up an ad hoc investigatory committee after Reynolds’ five-year term as head of family medicine was not renewed, but the focus shifted when the faculty of medicine dropped Reynolds entirely.

The committee, made up of Robert Miller, head of family medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ernest Redekop, professor emeritus of English at the University of Western Ontario, and chaired by Colin Stuttard, professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at Dalhousie University, found that Reynolds had been inappropriately removed from his position. The committee report, released in November 2009, further recommended that Reynolds should be reinstated.

When resolution was delayed, CAUT Council voted in April 2010 to impose censure if Reynolds’ situation hadn’t been addressed by November.

“While it took a long time, we’re glad that CAUT has been able to assist the parties in securing a satisfactory end to this difficult case,” Turk said.
