Highlights of the 42nd Council Meeting

Council honours Kanatia for 25 years of service

This year marks the 25th year that Kanatia Consulting Inc. has been providing life, accident and professional property insurance plans for CAUT members. In recognition of this, CAUT Council honoured Mr. Jim Howell, President of Kanatia, and Mr. Doug Power, Vice-President of Kanatia at its meeting in May with a special presentation, commemorating the 25 years of service to CAUT members.

1997 CAUT Awards

CAUT Council unanimously approved granting the 1997 Sarah Shorten Award to Dr. Susan Jackel of the University of Alberta. Council also unanimously approved granting the 1997 Academic Librarians’ Distinguished Service Award to Gwendolyn Ebbett of the University of Windsor. Special presentations will be made to Dr. Jackel and Ms. Ebbett at the November 1997 meeting of Council.

New Formula Approved for Certification Costs

For many years CAUT has financially assisted member associations with legal costs associated with union certification. At the initiative of the CAUT Executive and the CAUT Collective Bargaining & Economic Benefits Committee, CAUT Council approved a series of revisions to the existing policy. The revisions clarify the procedures that must be followed to obtain CAUT support for certification, and in particular emphasize a requirement to make better use of CAUT resources. In addition, the revised policy includes a new formula for the allocation of costs between CAUT and the member association. The new policy caps the CAUT subsidy and offers assistance beyond the subsidized amount in the form of a loan.

Revised Policy Statement on Investigational Procedures

The CAUT Academic Freedom & Tenure Committee has developed a revised set of procedures to be followed in situations where formal committees of inquiry and investigating committees are created. The revised policy, (re-titled "Policy Statement on CAUT Committees of Inquiry and Investigating Committees") received approval of CAUT Council in May. The policy outlines the procedures to be followed by individuals and member associations for complaints to the AF&T Committee as well as the procedures and terms of reference that will be followed by the Committee itself.

York University — Sanctions Lifted

On May 1 the governing Council of CAUT issued a general ALERT to its members, denouncing the actions of the Board of Governors and the Administration of York University which precipitated the strike of the academic staff, and authorizing the imposition of sanctions.

The ALERT is no longer in effect following the signing of a collective agreement at York University.
