International Women's Day Sets Stage for Activism

On March 8, women across the world marched against poverty and violence to mark the commemoration of International Women's Day. Labour and social activists from around the globe will be participating in events for the next eight months to demand solutions to the pervasive and continuing problems of poverty and violence against women, two of the main forces that have served to oppress women across almost all cultures and societies. Some of the events planned include workshops and community actions that are organized locally, nationally and internationally. Status of Women Canada has a web site containing information about activities that local faculty associations or other women's groups on campuses may be interested in organizing, a chronology of key dates in the struggle for women's rights in Canada, as well as resources, and links at: www.swc-cfc.gc.ca/iwd/index.html.
