Ontario Scholarships to Remain in the Provincial Domain

A recent decision by the Ontario government to change the distribution of the Ontario Graduate Scholarships has been thrown out. The provincial government was contemplating allotting the scholarships to institutions on a fixed basis to be granted at source, rather than by the province. "Ontario grads had very serious concerns about this since it represented a threat to mobility for students and a threat to their 'marketability' to grad programs," said Joel Duff, chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students' National Graduate Council. "We were also concerned that it would provide an incentive to grad schools to diminish institutional scholarships which are aimed at attracting OGS recipients." Many letters of protest were sent from the Ontario Graduate Association of the CFS and member locals. In May, Duff learned the whole idea had been crushed. "The CFS lobbying efforts paid off," said Duff. "This represents an incredible success."
