In an unprecedented move, the Concordia University senate voted to accommodate students who want to defer writing final exams so that they can demonstrate at the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City Apr. 20 22. About 9,000 people are expected to attend the summit for leaders of 34 nations in the western hemisphere meeting to discuss the possible formation by 2005 of a hemispheric free-trade zone known as the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Anti-globalization activists are expected out in force and the Concordia decision will allow student protesters a chance to attend the Quebec City summit. Students granted deferrals will sit their final exams later in the year.
