Teachers Fight Market Intrusion

CAUT along with hundreds of national and international counterparts will soon be signatory of a joint declaration for democratic education. In a concerted effort to keep public education out of trade agreements, an education forum hosted by the CSQ and the Canadian Teachers' Federation will take place in Quebec City Apr. 1718 in conjunction with the second Peoples' Summit of the Americas. The meeting is one of several events planned to coincide with the summit of the heads of state of the Americas, who will be in Canada for third round negotiations for a proposed free trade zone to extend to all the Americas. Like the WTO Millennium Round and the current negotiations on the General Agreement on Trade in Services, the Free Trade Area of the Americas negotiations could further threaten public education. Organizers are asking all social justice organizations to join colleagues throughout the Americas in protest on Apr. 20, while the leaders are holding their meeting.
