Members Step in to Fund Legal Collective

CAUT Council directed the Executive Committee to make a generous donation to the legal defence fund of the Quebec Legal Collective, a group providing legal services to people arrested in Quebec City during the Summit of the Americas earlier this year. Delegates also passed a resolution protesting the violation of constitutional rights and freedoms of those participating in anti-FTAA activities during the Summit. CAUT has donated $5,000 to the collective, matched by an additional $5,000 from the CAUT Civil Liberties Defence Fund. By the following month, CAUT local associations had donated more than an additional $7,000 to the CAUT Civil Liberties Defence Fund earmarked for the Quebec legal defence fund. "The donations are arriving almost daily," said CAUT president Tom Booth. "Clearly, our members are rallying in defence of civil liberties and the right of freedom of expression."
