Faculty unions at Regina and PEI are the latest to join the CAUT Defence Fund. At their annual general meeting in October, defence fund trustees approved memberships for the University of Regina Faculty Association and the University of Prince Edward Island Faculty Association. "With the addition of Regina and PEI, the fund now includes 31 associations representing more than 13,000 academics," said defence fund chair Denise Nevo. URFA and UPEIFA are the newest members since the late-1990s when faculty unions at Brock, Concordia, Queen's and Western Ontario joined. The defence fund was founded in 1978 to provide unionized Canadian academic staff associations with a unified strike fund. In recent years the fund has supplied strike benefits and interest-free loans to numerous associations, notably to striking faculty members at Memorial, Moncton and Cape Breton. "Despite such calls to action, the fund remains in excellent shape," Nevo said. The fund currently has assets in excess of $12 million.
