The following motion was unanimously approved at the University of Victoria Faculty Association General Meeting on Nov. 16, 2001 (brought forward by the UVic Faculty Association Status of Women Committee):

"On Oct. 1, 2001, Professor Sunera Thobani, Department of Women's Studies, University of British Columbia, made an impassioned speech against a war of retaliation in response to the tragedy of Sept. 11.

"The University of Victoria Faculty Association supports her right to speak her views freely, without being subject to threats or retaliation of any sort. In these troubled times, we wish to strongly support Professor Thobani's right to dissent as an integral part of academic freedom."
