CAUT Joins International Cultural Diversity Network

CAUT is adding its voice to more than 50 groups concerned about the impact of globalization and trade agreements on local cultures.

The International Network for Cultural Diversity is a worldwide coalition of artists, authors, media workers and other cultural groups dedicated to countering the homogenizing effects of globalization on culture.

"In many parts of the world, including Canada, the voices of local authors and artists are being drowned out by imported entertainment," said CAUT president Victor Catano. "Many of our colleagues in the academic world are authors and artists, and by joining INCD we can help better promote their interests on the international stage."

In addition to pressuring governments not to enter into any agreement that constrains local cultures and the policies that support them, INCD is also actively promoting a new international agreement that would provide a permanent legal foundation for cultural diversity.
