Queen's adjunct-ones have voted 76 per cent in favour of joining Queen's University Faculty Association as a separate bargaining unit.
Richard Greenfield, president of the faculty association, said the association is "thrilled" to see such a "clear and positive endorsement" by the last remaining group of unprotected teachers on campus.
"QUFA is the collective bargaining representative for some sessional and contract instructors and this gives us the opportunity to extend more widely the protections of membership in the faculty association," Greenfield explained.
The adjunct-one group - part-time faculty teaching less than two course credits - is diverse, including career academics, retirees and professionals from outside the university. Nearly 300 union members will form the agreed-on bargaining unit for the winter term.
"The faculty association has always maintained a strong commitment to end the exploitation of academic labour," Greenfield said.
"The only way to enforce fairness and job security is through organizing."
The faculty association was tied up in contract negotiations over the last several years, Greenfield added, and could not devote its time and resources to the organization and certification process.
"Now we're well on our way to serving the membership," he said.
The organizing campaign started late last fall, culminated in a vote on April 3 and a regional certification meeting on April 23.
