BUFA Members Vote for Strike

Brock University faculty and librarians, fed up with stalled contract negotiations and contentious meetings that have stretched for six months, voted 88 per cent in support of a vote authorizing their union executive to call a strike.

The Brock University Faculty Association had announced in early October it would hold a strike vote Oct. 25, if no deal had been reached by then on a new collective agreement. The union said after two days of mediation the proposals were “still unacceptable” and called for the strike vote to be held as scheduled.

Articles remaining on the bargaining table include peer input in promotion and tenure processes, post-retirement benefits and equitable provisions for librarians.

BUFA was certified as a union in 1996 and today represents 567 full-time academic staff at the university.
