Throughout the summer major media, university presidents and other individuals have denounced what they described as the decision of the University and College Union (CAUT’s counterpart in the UK) to boycott Israeli universities. There has been no such decision by UCU. Nor have they advanced a boycott or “moved to implement” a boycott. In response to a request to support a boycott, their annual general meeting voted to send the request to all UCU local branches and associations for discussion and debate. UCU has taken steps to ensure a fair debate by imposing rules such as “any union expenditure to support one side in the debate shall also be offered to the other” and by organizing regional meetings across the UK. The UCU has directed its general secretary to “ensure legitimate representatives of organisations from both Israel and Palestine and on both sides of the debate are available to speak at the regional meetings.” Further, the UCU executive directed the general secretary to “issue guidance on holding fair and even-handed debates to branches and associations who wish to hold local debates in addition to the regional meetings.”
