A timely reminder

Congratulations and thanks to Jon Thompson for his review of Save the World on Your Own Time (Bulletin, March 2009). His Bookshelf column accurately and precisely describes Stanley Fish’s argument and the dangers it represents.

Thompson’s piece serves as a reminder to academics in Canada that we are awarded tenure for a reason. The purpose of tenure is to ensure our academic freedom to criticize received doctrines in various domains. Sadly, too many of us, especially in recent decades, have lost sight of the purpose and duty conveyed by academic freedom and tenure.
