CAUT has established an ad hoc investigatory committee to examine allegations about the treatment of heterodox economists at the University of Manitoba economics department.
Under the terms of reference for its inquiry, the committee is to investigate whether there has been an attempt to eliminate or significantly reduce the heterodox tradition in the department of economics, and to determine, if such an attempt is found to have occurred, whether it constitutes a violation of academic freedom.
Based on its findings, the committee has been asked to make recommendations to deal with any issues it uncovers.
The committee members are Queen’s University law professor Allan Manson, University of Calgary English professor Pamela McCallum, and Larry Haiven, a professor of the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University. Manson will act as committee chair.
The committee is undertaking its first round of interviews this month and will follow up with a second round later in the summer.
