The Federation of New Brunswick Faculty Associations gave a cool reception to the provincial budget tabled by the Liberal government on Feb. 2.
The federation says the government broke its promise to spare the education sector from its latest round of austerity measures, and for the second year in a row, has imposed a freeze on university operating grants.
“In reality, this is a cut to university funding in a province that has the lowest rate of university graduation in Canada,” said federation president Jean Sauvageau.
“There’s no doubt that in order to continue to operate properly, universities will have to raise tuition fees for students who already have the largest debt load in the country. As a result, fewer New Brunswicker’s will have access to post-secondary education.”
