Alberta

Association of Academic Staff University of Alberta – AASUA

AASUA members will be hosting an information table and photo booth on campus to bring visibility to contract academic staff.


British Columbia

University of British Columbia Faculty Association – UBCFA

Monday, 24 October: The UBC Faculty Association President and CAS Chair will hand-deliver an official letter to the University President, inviting more awareness of and action on CAS issues. Public awareness booth in the student union building (the NEST) will be set up where we’ll speak to passers-by about CAS issues on campus and hand out petition postcards to sign.
Tuesday, 25 October: UBCFA will be hosting a members’ buffet lunch at the Peter Wall Centre with UBCFA President, Executive Director, Contract Faculty Committee (CFC) Chair and Committee, FA Member Services Officers, in attendance. Petition cards will be distributed.
Wednesday, 26 October: Continued postcard distribution; tenured and contract faculty individual lunch/coffee dates encouraged to raise awareness and have one on one discussions. UBC CFC Chair attends a joint event at BCIT.
Thursday, 27 October: Member buffet lunch at UBC-O, Kelowna campus. There will be speeches by UBC-O Provost, UBCFA President, and UBC CFC Chair. Further distribution of petition cards.
Friday, 28 October: Joint pub social with other local units (UBC, BCIT, Langara, TSSU, SFUFA, ETEA, VCC, FPSE)


Nova Scotia

Dalhousie Faculty Association – DFA / Saint Mary's University Faculty Union – SMUFA

Thursday, 27 October: The DFA and SMUFA will be hosting a panel discussion, entitled PrecariousU, which explore the disturbing trend of increased levels of precarious employment on university campuses. The pantel will feature Karen Foster, Dalhousie University sociologist and author of a research report on precarious academic work in Nov Scotia, Karen Harper, a contract instructor, Sylvia Fuller, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of British Columbia, David Robinson, Executive Director, Canadian Association of University Teachers and will be moderated by Claire McIlveen, Columnist for the Chronicle Herald.

Huron University College Faculty Association – HUCFA

Monday, 24 October – Wednesday, 26 October: HUCFA members will be hosting an information table on campus from 11:00 am -2:00 pm.

The Contract Lecturer’s Committee at Lakehead University will be hosting an information table on campus.

Monday, 24 October: OCADFA members will be hosting an information table and button making party in the campus lobby.
Tuesday, 26 October: OCADFA members will be hosting an information table and button making party in the campus lobby. At 4 pm, OCADFA will host a film screening of a video produced by Craig Berggold on challenges OCAD’s sessional instructors face. At  4:45 pm, OCADFA have organized a keynote address from Alison Hearn, who  will discuss “Chakmagate” and its fall-out.

Finally, WLUFA is sponsoring a free showing of a film by two WLUFA members (Garry Potter, regular faculty, and Stephen Svenson, contract faculty) at a local theatre (see flyer). UBCFA:

Monday, October 5: the Faculty Association President and CAS Chair will send an official letter to the University President, inviting more awareness of and action on CAS issues. CAUT Posters will be put up around campus: buttons and petition postcards (addressed to the University President) will start distribution. CAS will have been sent announcements of FE activities + CAUT website links on how to get involved.
Wednesday, October 7: World Day for Decent Work! We will have a booth in the new Student Union Building, where we’ll speak to passers-by about CAS issues on campus, hand out petition postcards to sign and give out cakes – we will deliver all the postcards we have by the end of the day, to the University President’s office.
Thursday, October 8: Special Meet-and-Greet Lunch to meet members of the CAS Committee, and the Member Services Officers of the Faculty Association – petition postcards continue to be distributed.
Friday, October 9: Launch of 2 monthly programs – a Community of Practice in teaching, co-sponsored by the Faculty Association and our Centre for Teaching and Learning Technology + a Pub Social – petition postcards will continue to be distributed.

WUFA:

Thursday October 8: Windsor is hosting a coffee/cake event in the main foyer of the CAW Student Centre to promote FEW. The same day, they will hand out buttons, and generally speak to students about precarious employment.  A student will be taking photos of the event to help with a video the Committee is working on.
All week:  Each day of the week WUFA’s Sessional Committee has posting a relevant article on WUFA’s facebook and twitter concerning national stories on contract academic staff. They’ve put posters around campus.

Ottawa Roundtable: Precarious academic labour: challenges and strategies
The growing problem of precarious academic labour is getting increasing media attention. About 50% of the classes taught at the University of Ottawa are taught by Contract Academic Staff. University administrations have been increasingly relying on Contract Academic Staff as a way to reduce the costs of education. But what are the risks to public education? What can we do about it? This session will feature a conversation amongst faculty who have worked in permanent and contract positions. Sponsoring organizations – CAUT, APUO and APTPUO. This event was bilingual.
Where: 90 University, Room 140
When: Tuesday, October 7, 12:00pm-1:00pm. Lunch was served.

Vancouver

On October 25, the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of British Columbia has organized a half-day conference on contingent academic issues, focusing on layoffs and collective bargaining campaigns. College of New Caledonia
In 2013, the Faculty Association of CNC had a FA’s Oktoberfest Social and Kickoff to FEW on Friday, Oct. 18, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the FA Office, 3477-15th Avenue. Map

Kwantlen Polytechnic University
The Kwantlen Faculty Association at Kwantlen Polytechnic University hosted a Wine and Cheese reception for Non-regular faculty and their allies. The reception was at 4:00 on October 22, 2013 in the KFA office. All faculty were welcomed.
